THE ROSE & THE MIRROR

20150804123718_resizedThe Rose & The Mirror
It is not for the rose to declare its beauty,
But to exist and simply be,
In perfect poise before
An admiring mirror.
…..

I cannot say I am beautiful or attractive. Not when I live in my skin and know very well where all my skeletons are hidden. Thus I answered when asked why I was so hesitant in accepting compliments and praise. But the answer then took me to an older reply of an older inquiry. Perhaps one of the oldest question entertained by mankind, and this is it – Why did God create the world? Why am I here? In a famous Sufi lore, God replied, “I was a Hidden Treasure, and I wanted to be known.”

Like a mirror placed before an incomparable and blinding beauty, the natural state of the world of Men and Djinn is prostrating before the Creator – reflecting upon Allah Almighty, to acknowledge, to praise and to worship Him in His immeasurable Glory, Light and infinite Mercy.

In the holy Quran, Allah (swt) expresses Himself unequivocally thus -

“I created the jinn and humankind only that they might worship Me.”
(Quran 51:56, Marmaduke Pickthall)

May we be the mirrors we are meant to be, sunshine, to negate our own ego’s rampant vanity and to complete the divine equation of Love, Beauty and Adoration. To be quite honest here, It is not the easiest algorithm to solve but it is the most enchanting mystery that any student may commit his life and death to uncover!

20151229011502_resizedThe Rose & The Mirror II
A mirror cannot adore a rose
If it persists in thinking
Itself to be the rose.
One must be adored
And the other must be the mirror.
One must be God,
And the other the worshipper.
……

May we always be supported by Allah (swt) and His Beloved Muhammad Sayyidina Mahsusun Bilmajid (sws). For the wandering soul there is no happier or safer way than this path revealed by AllahuFattah (God the Opener, the Revealer).

THE ADAB (COURTESY) OF LOVE – flash of the blinding obvious

artflow_201612111025_resized88. Passion 2
Sobriety and Patience
Is better than Passion,
They become wine to those
Who have passed the state of intoxication.
……..

Thus was recorded in the collection of prose known as The DamSunSunAna some 13 years ago. Last night, poor old dumb me was visited by the same subject, with a sharper lesson -

The Adab of Love
Some use love as a pretext
An excuse for discourtesy,

But is not love the best reason
For good manners and civility?
The reining in of passion
In deference to courtesy?
……..

13 long years, sunshine. And hardly any personal improvement. Although realising the flash of the  blinding obvious is, I guess, some type of progress.

Have a wonderful day, sunshine. I shall spend what is left of mine contemplating the blinding obvious, the Adab of Love and my trail of tears…

THE DEVIL AND OUR EGO, HIS MOST LOYAL ACOLYTE

19022012588Why
Why oh why?
Why did I die?
Why oh why?
Why did I lie?
Thinking I will never be found out?
…….

sedih 2Every time we lie, we die a little. Of this I am certain, and many times more than I care to count I have found myself at my own funeral, looking into my own grave.

Like tango, it takes two to lie. So long as we are weak and a slave to our own ego, our life shall always be divided – between our heart and our ego. And all too often it is our ego that we will believe, while our heart’s admonishments and advice we stubbornly ignore.

Yes, the devil, our enemy tirelessly lays siege upon our peace and happiness, but whispers are his only armoury. It his good fortune that in our ego his evil whispers have found a most loyal acolyte.

Man & His Lies
The devil was asked
Why it was so easy to deceive Man,
To which he replied,
“I have not found,
In all my travel and adventure,
A creature more adept at self-deception
A student more diligent in the science of self-destruction
Than the children of Adam and Eve”
……..

In a world full of mad preachers and merciless sermons, there is always this risk, a very present and real danger, that our very best efforts of piety or charity are diverted and corrupted by our own ego, hubris and self-deception. The road to hell is paved with good intentions… someone said.

So remember BismillahiRahmaniRahim, sunshine. Declare your purpose in everything that you say or do in the Name of God the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. Leave no words or deeds without this accompaniment – a gift of Allah to Rasulullah (sws) and his nation that is priceless beyond measure.

Say it, my friend, believe it, then cross the road without fear.

THE CUPBEARER

artflow_201612232206The Cupbearer
His cup is dirty,
Not pristine, not clear,
However fine the truth may be,
However sweet the water,
She will not take his poetry
Nor drink his words any longer.

For he is the lost seeker,
The oath breaker,
The cup bearer,
Cast aside and alone
But for his pride
So bitter.

………

Have care, sunshine, where you put your faith, for whatever you may plan or desire, Allah Almighty disposes of your precious arrangements as He deems fit in His All-Knowing All-wise wisdom.

In whatever you endeavour to do attend to Allah first foremost and last and do not be like the cupbearer. Consult with the One Who does not break His Divine Promises, and hold fiercely to His Sayyidina ‘Urwatu Wuthqa (the Trusty Handhold) – being our beloved Nabi Muhammad (sws). Surely, AllahuRahman (swt) will thus guarantee your success in this world and AllahuRahim (swt) will confirm your success in the Hereafter. Believe me!

HIKING IN THE MONTH OF RABI UL AWWAL

Rabi ul AwwalAt The End of This Trail
I am leaving my ‘I’ behind,
I am leaving my ‘me’ and walking empty,
I am crossing the valley
On my own two feet,
Whistling a hymn for him,
You know, my Prophet
You know, my meaning
You know, my everything,

I am leaving my cares behind,
For God says He will take care of it all,
I am leaving my lies for His truth
I am leaving my anxieties and worries,
For God tells me that He will
Take care of all that too,

On my own, alone with my Maker
Striding into being
From a place of illusion
To the place of Existence
A step at a time
A breath at a time,

With His permission
We are setting upon a journey
To our Homecoming, to Him
To our Lord Almighty,
Where waits at the end of this trail
His Ocean of Mercy.
……..

Dearest, here we are in the beginning of the month of Rabi ul Awwal, the month of your birth, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (sws), God’s Mercy to all the Worlds, to all Nations, to all things known and unknown to us.

Dearest, we turn to you, as our teacher and master, as our commander and confidant, as our intimate guide into the sweet intimacies between the Divine and the Created. Lead us, dearer beyond measure, love us, and leave us never to the caprice of of our ego, to the temptation of our nafs (base desires) nor to the whispering of the accursed enemy and his minions.

Intercede for us, dearer than our breath, to reach our Lord Allah (swt) in the divine presence ever lasting. Bring us, my captain, to the end of this trail, to Allah’s Ocean of Mercy.

GOD, GOODNESS & FAMILIARITY…

rain-girlGod & Goodness
Our taste for God and goodness needs adjustments,
To develop our nose and divine discernments -

To distinguish between what is to be encouraged,
What is to be questioned and what is to be warned against,
What is to be admonished and what is to be avoided,
And lastly, what is to be confronted and challenged!
………..

A SEA OF MERCIFUL MEANINGS. Not that long ago, an epiphany hit me like a truck out of control. And that is whatever I may be doing and reciting in my sembahyang / solaT (prayers), I have the barest idea of their meanings –  All that recitations and the postures that make up our prayers. What I know of its meaning and significance is the merest wisp of an understanding… So now, I realise that when I contemplate my prayersIt is like skimming on the surface of a sea of merciful meanings unfathomable in its depth and secrets.

20150804123718_resizedNO TIME TO REST. And I was happy to be at that place – that place of unknowing, humbled by my utter lack of knowledge. But today I am jolted out of that complacency of a humility that is perhaps too convenient and lethargic. For an ancient friend advised me not to be contented being a fool, and to learn what can be learnt and what Allah al-Alim (God the All-knowing) has allotted since pre time for us to learn. By acquiring a taste for God and His goodness, we hone and develop a sharp sense of discernment which will in contradistinction develop our sense of what is the opposite of God and goodness – ergo our ego, its wickedness, hate and hubris, pride, greed, envy, selfishness and indolence. That way (says my friend), what bad you once tolerated of yourself, you will learn to avoid as you gain the taste for the perfume of God and goodness. As you grow in familiarity with Allah (swt) and with His most precious gift to all creation, Nabi Muhammad Sayyidina Hadiyatullah (the Gift of Allah) (sws) you ought to now become repulsed by the wicked odour of Satan our enemy, the overpowering smell of our own egotism and the ambivalent scent of this worldliness…

Familiarity
The ones familiar with the garden of love and its perfume
Will abhor and avoid the devil’s dumping yard
Of man’s egotism, greed and selfish love.

THE GREATEST GIFT FROM GOD

20150804123718_resizedThe one & the one to be blame
In the kingdom of love,
A sin is a sin even if
You are not to be blamed.

For in the Kingdom of Love
Where the Lord is King,
Who else can be blamed
But he to whom
Belongs your
Name?
………..

Just Say Sorry. If you are familiar with romantic love and perhaps even married life, how often have you found yourself admitting to things which were not your fault? How many times have you, through gritted teeth, spoken those three magical words “I am sorry” and “Please forgive me“, while holding down your rebellious reason aching to correct your beloved’s misconception and holler, “But it is NOT my fault!

He he he. You know what I mean.

god 2But who is the one actually fond of blaming others? Now consider your entire life. Indeed, your very creation, and how you relate to God Almighty. For Allah (swt) has made it abundantly clear that He makes no mistakes, He is furthest from any concept of error, perfect in every action that He does or permits to happen, and perfect in every absence or omission that He prevails upon us. Yes, of course some bad things do occur through a third party machinations, say a burglar or a traitorous friend. But even then, it would not have happened had not Allah Almighty permitted the burglary or betrayal to happen. So do we blame God then, like how lawyers call Force Majeure as Acts of God, like flood, earthquakes and droughts?

Yes, we do. You know what I mean. We blame God a lot. Perhaps not spoken, but secretly whispered in our soul by our finger-pointing ego. And perhaps no one else can hear them, but do you think you can hide your feelings from our Creator?

So you see, all this judging and placing the blame is very much a part of our selves. Our rationale mind, subtly manipulated by our ego are always eager to place blame for everything bad that happens… so long as someone else is the one to be blamed, even God. And if you study the underlying causes in the rise of atheism especially in the West, the perception that God is somehow the cause of great evil upon us at a very personal level is one major factor in turning a man’s belief into disbelief. Sad but true.

mountain-climber-silhouette2THE GREATEST GIFT. How fortunate are we then, my love, that we have been blessed to stumble into saints who are tirelessly guiding mankind towards the true perception of Allah (swt) in All His Loving Attributes. And although we have done nothing to deserve Allah’s generosity He has sworn upon His own Name that He is the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful, Most Generous and Most Loving for his creation – the most manifest evidence of His generosity and eternal concern for us being nothing and no one else but the prophethood of His Beloved, Nabi Muhammad Sayyidina Habibullah Harisun Alaykum (sws), divinely ordained to be our master and guardian, and to watch over us constantly, 24/7.

By the proof of such divine kindness, o’ Lord, how else shall we approach Thee but through the Door of Witnessing and the Door of Forgiveness?

There is so much to learn, you see, in the intimacies of mortal love, and its direct analogies to the Divine Presence and Divine Love. Through such lessons, may Allah (swt) permit us to endear ourselves to His Pleasure by being in the company of the One He Loves the Most, our beloved Prophet Muhammad Sayyidina Nabiyit Taubah, the Prophet of Repentance (sws).

WHAT EMPTY CUP? …pretences of emptiness & the pathfinders

IMG_20160924_211029What Empty Cup?
Indeed, my son. You must come
To us with an empty cup.

For what enlightenment can we pour
Into a cup if already full?

So first, let us crack away
At your pretences
Of emptiness.
…….

mountain-climber-silhouette2We are cutting through the multi-layered cake that is our ego, divining its many secrets doors, pathways and disguises by which our ego captures our mind, our conscience and impersonate even our hearts. Who is to say for sure when we are free of our ego, trapped as we are in our material body and very real needs, wants and desires?

On this spiritual path, you must have a pathfinder. A ranger who will lead you through the forest of your own self-deception, protect you from witches and warlocks, give you spiritual sustenance to carry you through the hardest, driest drought. You cannot do this alone, my love. So ask God Almighty for a pathfinder, a Master of the Path (a Shaykh of the Tariqa) who can take a stubborn foolish pupil and turn his weakness into strength, his lies into truths and transform you into the best you that God Almighty and His Messenger (sws) had always intended for you.

And if along the way you find this sinner stumbling in the brush, having lost the path, call to me and help me back on right track. Lord knows His servant often errs!rain-girl

THE SECRET HISTORY OF FOOLS …about love and getting blamed

dark-room-light-through-window-hunched-man1My Secret History
I have a library of my secret history
Known only to God and me,
But know you not
That in the library
Are countless volumes
known only to God alone?
……….

IMG_20160128_070805_resized_1Secret Even to Us. My love, we all have secrets. Some are virtues and kindness, done in quiet disguise, while many are our sins, curses and dalliance in vice. But good or bad, we would actually know most of our deeds, our acts and omissions. What we are interested in is however those errors that we have committed unaware. And it is these sins that are hidden in the secret volumes of our secret history known only to Allah (swt) while we stumble along in blissful ignorance.

Why Are We Blamed For What We Do Not Know? Such is the blessings which grace every moment of our wakefulness and sleep, in this world and in the Hereafter, that we are forever indebted to our Lord and to His Messenger Muhammad (sws). And we cannot begin to enumerate the quality nor the quantity of His divine generosity. It is because of this blessed indebtedness that we turn to Him, seeking His forgiveness not only of His blessings that we are aware of but we intentionally or unintentionally forget, but also of His blessings that we shall forever be ignorant of.

The Answer is Love. But why should we be judged for what we are unaware? That does appear somewhat unfair, yes? But did someone long ago not say “All is fair in love and war“? And eons ago we did declare our love, my friend. Like the fools that we were we declared our intention to worship and to adore Allah Almighty when there was no one and nothing else in creation that dared take that burden of choice.

Perhaps we are indeed fools. But better the fool of God than the wise of our own egos.

BE SILENT, BE NOTHING … listen and obey

IMG_20160829_125219_resizedBe Silent
A mureed (disciple) approached his Shaykh (master) with a problem, ”O’ Shaykh! I have difficulty being humble. Can you help me?
The Shaykh said, “Yes. Remain silent.”
Okay.” Answered the mureed. After a few awkward moments he then said, “And…?

And what?” The Shaykh was surprised, seeing the mureed was still looking at him attentively.

I am still waiting for your advice, o’ Shaykh!

The Shaykh clarified, “That IS my advice. Remain silent. Easiest thing to do.
…………

Silence. The Shaykh may have been a little disingenuous. More often than not keeping quiet is not the easiest thing to do. Not when our ego is baying to bark, to cajole, to argue, to whine, to gossip, to generally stake our presence in the stage of egos that is this world. Our ego demands for us to be heard and recognised. But the spiritual path in almost all religion is to stay silent, to listen and to obey. In other words, to be nothing.

Be Nothing
Be silent, listen and obey
And be akin to nothing
In this crowded world
Where every human ego
Is crying for attention!

Be silent, listen and obey
And see how the Lord of Everything
Attends to the one
Seeking to be
Nothing.
…………

This was the silent prayers of Mary, the Mother of Jesus (a.s.) and that of Sayyidina Abu Bakar as-Siddiq (r.a.), the devoted companion of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.s.). It must mean something then, desiring to be nothing.

The Golden Silence Sometimes though remaining silent does not mean our ego is not expressing itself, because the human ego can also work in the opposite way – for instance, when we refuse to greet someone whom we dislike. In that way, breaking the silence with a kindly greeting of salam (peace) IS the way to overcome our ego. Renewing friendship and bonds of kinship… all these are wonderful exercises in overcoming our ego!

81915029_5fbaab5a64So you see, the Shaykh is not simply advising us to be mute and silent like the grave. It is rather to permit our ego no means to express itself, either by our words and action, or through our silence and inaction. This is the golden silence which we may find through listening and obeying God, His Messenger (s.a.w.s.) and those that has been charged with authority over us.

Think about it, sunshine. Let this dwell in the savanna of your consciousness and we will see what sort of Moon now rises over the horizon of your secret contemplation.
