YA LATIF, the One Subtle, Gracious, Refined

dreams wacomal-Latīf
I am unwell, Love
Afflicted in body and spirit,
Wearied night and day,
Fevered head to feet,
But Your name, Your Name…
I still say… and I still weep.

Oh Most Subtle,
Heal my body gently,
Oh Most Gracious,
Cure my sickness for riches,
Oh Most Refined,
Be tender, and to me
Be not unkind.

26062011446-2Luxury and indulgence are poor masters, while adversity and tribulations make the best teachers. Since last night, poor old Notrumi has been afflicted with sickness, but I kept up, as best as I can, my prayers and contemplation.

It was this morning, as I was completing our supererogatory devotions for the holy month of Rajab, that I muttered quietly, “ya Latif, ya Latif, ya Latif…” one of the holy names of God meaning the One Subtle, Gracious and Refined. The meaning of His name enveloped me in my tiredness, made me both happy and sad, and hopeful – Oh Latif, how this sickly servant is in desperate need of Your tenderness, Your grace and kindness. Oh Latif, do You not see this poor servant calling You? And at the end of each cycle of recitation (if we remember to), we would dedicate our poor stumbling devotion for His Beloved Habibullah Sayyidina Muhammad (sws),

It is only the 13th night of Rajab, so there are many more ‘ya Latif’ to say in honour of this blessed month. Strange that a sickness brought a poignant insight into this beautiful name of our Beloved God. Funny how things turn out better, don’t they, my pet?

PATIENCE PATIENTLY WAITING… meeting as-Sabūr in Ramadan

largePatience Patiently Waiting
A day is added to our life,
Will we live in truth,
Or persist in our lies?

A day is added to our days,
Will we still be in error,
Or will we change our ways?

A morning is added to our mornings,
Yet day after day after day
God is still patiently waiting…
While we sigh, pause
And delay.
…………

The Patient People. We are quite a shameless lot, are we not, sunshine? Oh, how we make such a drama of our trials and tribulations, the passing of our friends and kin, the accidents, the failed ambitions, the broken hearts and the end of dreams. We care only of our feelings, our sense of lost, our tests. We try to be patient in the face of worldly afflictions.

21_oktober_2010The Patient Prophet. But what is our middling patience compared to the patience of the prophets? As the best of creation, it is upon their backs that the most trying tests are borne and the weariest tasks are endured patiently. And among all prophets of God  undoubtedly it is His final messenger and the seal of the prophets, Sayyidina Muhammad (saws) that stands unreachable in his station of patience.

We are His creation, this Lord God, and the created cannot encompass the Creator. But God has commanded us to worship Him, to come to love and adore Him. But how can we love what we do not know? Thus Allah has bestowed upon us our mind, the ability to inquire and contemplate His immeasurable nature – like little sands on the shore of His Holy Names, we are pondering upon His endless ocean of Attributes, all wonderful, all infinitely glorious.

The Patient God. It is in patience, that most holy of virtues that our Nabi Muhammad (saws) is in worshipful prostration to the very essence of patience that is Allah Almighty, known by one of his 99 names, as as-Sabūr, the Most Patient, the Patiently-Enduring One.

There is really no need to bring the rest of the world into our little exposition, my love. We can examine our own weakness and impiety in comparison to God’s abiding and sustaining love for us, to know that we are constantly blessed by His immeasurable patience, whatever our sinful state.

Thank you for spending a little time here in this corner of my thoughts.  Pray for me, please…

THE DERVISH & THE NINETY-NINE

IMGThe Dervish & The Ninety-Nine
Come to Love,
See how bliss Love is,

Say Love’s names
And die for Love’s kiss,

Behind the veil,
His love is tested and teased,

Through snow, rain and hail
Love feeds his heart and breaks his will,

However far the wandering trail
Walks the dervish while the world sleeps,

Exalted is Love in every forest, hill and vale
With Ninety-Nine written on his lips.
…………….

TGIF. Well, thank God it is Friday, sunshine. And thank God for you and for me, for our cat named Moses and thank God for our shaykhs (masters). Thank God for our Nabi Muhammad Sayyidina Miftahur Rahman wa Miftahul Jannah (our Prophet Muhammad, Master Key to Divinely Mercy and the Heavenly Gardens). And of course most importantly… thank God for God Himself, Allahu Rahman (God Most Compassionate) and Allahu Rahim (God Most Merciful). Even for a sinner, there is many thankings to do today. He he he. These are just 2 divine names from ninety-nine that is revealed to mankind. May we be blessed to learn and benefit from more of God’s Divine Names, in their infinitely subtle depths of meaning.

Come on, sunshine… The dervish is just a little further up the path. We must follow the perfume of love that beckons us to his saintly footsteps!
