THE ADAB (COURTESY) OF LOVE – flash of the blinding obvious

artflow_201612111025_resized88. Passion 2
Sobriety and Patience
Is better than Passion,
They become wine to those
Who have passed the state of intoxication.
……..

Thus was recorded in the collection of prose known as The DamSunSunAna some 13 years ago. Last night, poor old dumb me was visited by the same subject, with a sharper lesson -

The Adab of Love
Some use love as a pretext
An excuse for discourtesy,

But is not love the best reason
For good manners and civility?
The reining in of passion
In deference to courtesy?
……..

13 long years, sunshine. And hardly any personal improvement. Although realising the flash of the  blinding obvious is, I guess, some type of progress.

Have a wonderful day, sunshine. I shall spend what is left of mine contemplating the blinding obvious, the Adab of Love and my trail of tears…

THE WAY OF DREAMS

dreams wacomThe Way of Dreams
Dreams is not the place for
You to relax your vigilance,
Dreams is not the place where
There is no right or wrong.

So learn to wake up in your dreams
And be conscious of your actions
Lest your nightly carelessness
Follows you into daybreak
And wakefulness.
……….

Hullo, sunshine. Notrumi has been unwell of late. It is something in the air and the wet tropical season that is causing clinics to be full of running noses and rising temperatures.

May the words and our own sickness give us greater motivation for vigilance against an enemy that is ceaseless in his enmity for the children of Adam, day or night. May we be guided from hubris, ignorance and discourtesies, awake or in our dreams.

And Now A Question – Is the prose talking about what we normally call wakefulness and sleep, or is the prose an analogy, this world being our dream state, and death our abrupt wakefulness to the truthful reality? But you know what, sunshine? I really cannot make up my mind…

GOD, GOODNESS & FAMILIARITY…

rain-girlGod & Goodness
Our taste for God and goodness needs adjustments,
To develop our nose and divine discernments -

To distinguish between what is to be encouraged,
What is to be questioned and what is to be warned against,
What is to be admonished and what is to be avoided,
And lastly, what is to be confronted and challenged!
………..

A SEA OF MERCIFUL MEANINGS. Not that long ago, an epiphany hit me like a truck out of control. And that is whatever I may be doing and reciting in my sembahyang / solaT (prayers), I have the barest idea of their meanings –  All that recitations and the postures that make up our prayers. What I know of its meaning and significance is the merest wisp of an understanding… So now, I realise that when I contemplate my prayersIt is like skimming on the surface of a sea of merciful meanings unfathomable in its depth and secrets.

20150804123718_resizedNO TIME TO REST. And I was happy to be at that place – that place of unknowing, humbled by my utter lack of knowledge. But today I am jolted out of that complacency of a humility that is perhaps too convenient and lethargic. For an ancient friend advised me not to be contented being a fool, and to learn what can be learnt and what Allah al-Alim (God the All-knowing) has allotted since pre time for us to learn. By acquiring a taste for God and His goodness, we hone and develop a sharp sense of discernment which will in contradistinction develop our sense of what is the opposite of God and goodness – ergo our ego, its wickedness, hate and hubris, pride, greed, envy, selfishness and indolence. That way (says my friend), what bad you once tolerated of yourself, you will learn to avoid as you gain the taste for the perfume of God and goodness. As you grow in familiarity with Allah (swt) and with His most precious gift to all creation, Nabi Muhammad Sayyidina Hadiyatullah (the Gift of Allah) (sws) you ought to now become repulsed by the wicked odour of Satan our enemy, the overpowering smell of our own egotism and the ambivalent scent of this worldliness…

Familiarity
The ones familiar with the garden of love and its perfume
Will abhor and avoid the devil’s dumping yard
Of man’s egotism, greed and selfish love.

…AND ASK ME FOR ME

dark-room-light-through-window-hunched-man1Love is Good at Loving
For the longest time, I was content
To ask love for things to love,
And love satisfied my cravings,
Showering me with such things
To enamour and delight me.

For love is good at loving, you see.

Until one day, love asked me,
“Why are you happy with
Cheap baubles and trinkets
Of worldly things?
When I am here,
Dearer beyond imagining,
Closer to you than
Your own breathing.

You seek happiness in this world,
But worldly promises are held
In a cup most fragile,
You seek caring companionship
But your friendships are adrift
In a sea most wild.

Before you I am here in my perfection.
I am the eternal sea of mercy,
I am the balm of sincerity,
I am the measure of beauty,
To be praised there is none more worthy,
And I have made myself befitting
To be loved and adored beyond reckoning.

But again and again, you asked for things,
This, that and the other
But never me… never me.

Wake up, cast aside the veil,

Then ask love for love,

And ask me for me.”

THE SECRET HISTORY OF FOOLS …about love and getting blamed

dark-room-light-through-window-hunched-man1My Secret History
I have a library of my secret history
Known only to God and me,
But know you not
That in the library
Are countless volumes
known only to God alone?
……….

IMG_20160128_070805_resized_1Secret Even to Us. My love, we all have secrets. Some are virtues and kindness, done in quiet disguise, while many are our sins, curses and dalliance in vice. But good or bad, we would actually know most of our deeds, our acts and omissions. What we are interested in is however those errors that we have committed unaware. And it is these sins that are hidden in the secret volumes of our secret history known only to Allah (swt) while we stumble along in blissful ignorance.

Why Are We Blamed For What We Do Not Know? Such is the blessings which grace every moment of our wakefulness and sleep, in this world and in the Hereafter, that we are forever indebted to our Lord and to His Messenger Muhammad (sws). And we cannot begin to enumerate the quality nor the quantity of His divine generosity. It is because of this blessed indebtedness that we turn to Him, seeking His forgiveness not only of His blessings that we are aware of but we intentionally or unintentionally forget, but also of His blessings that we shall forever be ignorant of.

The Answer is Love. But why should we be judged for what we are unaware? That does appear somewhat unfair, yes? But did someone long ago not say “All is fair in love and war“? And eons ago we did declare our love, my friend. Like the fools that we were we declared our intention to worship and to adore Allah Almighty when there was no one and nothing else in creation that dared take that burden of choice.

Perhaps we are indeed fools. But better the fool of God than the wise of our own egos.

BE SILENT, BE NOTHING … listen and obey

IMG_20160829_125219_resizedBe Silent
A mureed (disciple) approached his Shaykh (master) with a problem, ”O’ Shaykh! I have difficulty being humble. Can you help me?
The Shaykh said, “Yes. Remain silent.”
Okay.” Answered the mureed. After a few awkward moments he then said, “And…?

And what?” The Shaykh was surprised, seeing the mureed was still looking at him attentively.

I am still waiting for your advice, o’ Shaykh!

The Shaykh clarified, “That IS my advice. Remain silent. Easiest thing to do.
…………

Silence. The Shaykh may have been a little disingenuous. More often than not keeping quiet is not the easiest thing to do. Not when our ego is baying to bark, to cajole, to argue, to whine, to gossip, to generally stake our presence in the stage of egos that is this world. Our ego demands for us to be heard and recognised. But the spiritual path in almost all religion is to stay silent, to listen and to obey. In other words, to be nothing.

Be Nothing
Be silent, listen and obey
And be akin to nothing
In this crowded world
Where every human ego
Is crying for attention!

Be silent, listen and obey
And see how the Lord of Everything
Attends to the one
Seeking to be
Nothing.
…………

This was the silent prayers of Mary, the Mother of Jesus (a.s.) and that of Sayyidina Abu Bakar as-Siddiq (r.a.), the devoted companion of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.s.). It must mean something then, desiring to be nothing.

The Golden Silence Sometimes though remaining silent does not mean our ego is not expressing itself, because the human ego can also work in the opposite way – for instance, when we refuse to greet someone whom we dislike. In that way, breaking the silence with a kindly greeting of salam (peace) IS the way to overcome our ego. Renewing friendship and bonds of kinship… all these are wonderful exercises in overcoming our ego!

81915029_5fbaab5a64So you see, the Shaykh is not simply advising us to be mute and silent like the grave. It is rather to permit our ego no means to express itself, either by our words and action, or through our silence and inaction. This is the golden silence which we may find through listening and obeying God, His Messenger (s.a.w.s.) and those that has been charged with authority over us.

Think about it, sunshine. Let this dwell in the savanna of your consciousness and we will see what sort of Moon now rises over the horizon of your secret contemplation.

GOD OR SYSTEM? … and the Nur of Muhammad

Slide10God System or God
Do I believe in God?
Or do I believe in a belief system?
It is not the same thing.

I talk of His power and oneness,
I write of His mercy and compassion.
I talk and I write like I am cursed,
But I disregard His presence,

For he is here now!

Reading what is written here,
Reading what is in my mind,
Seeing what I hide in the depth of my soul…

Oh my Lord, forgive me!

Abandon me not to my vanity,
Now that my bones
Are growing old, weary and cold…
………………

Oh Notrumi, in your quaint way you think you know Him. But you do not. But verily, as the Creator of the worlds He is well aware of all that dwell within them. Thus He is aware of you, my love…

Before I
My awareness of you precedes your awareness of Me.
My understanding of you precedes your understanding of Me.
My love for you precedes your love for Me.

dark-room-light-through-window-hunched-man1Do not stray from Allah (swt), sunshine. Even in your most pious prayers, even in your most soulful recitations, do not forget Him. For verily man are oft to forget in the most unlikely of occasions, becoming possessed with the perceived knowledge of God, and not possessed by the Lord Himself in His Most Gracious and Most Merciful of His attributes!

This are fine lines drawn in the sand, but my love, it is necessary for He is AllahuHalim, AllahuLatiff (the Lord Most Gentle, the Lord Most Subtle)…

Before II
And beyond My Love and Compassion for everything,
Lo, there was a time beyond time when there was only
My Love and My Compassion for the Light of My Beloved,
The Nur of Muhammad that precedes all of Creation.

The Sciences, the Saliqas & the Blessings of the Prophet (saws)

C360_2013-01-06-19-17-58Science of Blessings
Science is wonderful because it reveals the inner working of the Universe,
Science is an answer to the mystics’ persistent prayers to the Almighty;
“O’ Lord, before I seek more blessings from Thee,
Unveil what is hidden and awaken me
To the Reality of Your Blessings
That is already surrounding me.”
………

Oak_Tree_ComboSCIENCE. Notrumi wrote this observation many many years ago, ‘Some scientists utilise their talent and science to explain God while other use science to explain away God.’ And I think this is true now as it was then. What do you think, my love?

LIMITATIONS OF PHYSICAL SCIENCE. Of course, physical sciences may only go so far to illustrate Allah’s amazing handiwork. The science of understanding Allah’s plans is a matter for the spiritual ‘metaphysical’ sciences, that subtle and highly nuanced area of inner knowledge that exists within and gives real meaning to the outer reality of our shapes and forms. People generally call such knowledge and practices as religion.

The Saliqas (seekers of Truth) call it life.

IMG_20150824_184434How do you pray, sunshine? Is it a peaceful blissful moment? Or are you often harangued in mid-prayers by a disconcerting voice -
O’ beggar! There you go, pleading and begging Allah (swt) for more and more blessings. O’ ingrate, think for a moment and ask Allah (swt) to reveal to you the truth of His blessings that are already benefiting you without you even being aware of it! O’ ignoramus, this is enough for you! Your feeble consciousness is simply unable to comprehend the sheer quantity and quality of His blessings that courses through the very sub-atomic particle that forms your body! O’ sinner, Allah’s (swt) all-encompassing love and compassion for His creation precedes you in the past, in the present and in the future! That is why your thankfulness and gratitude must be accompanied with a conscious seeking of His forgiveness and His mercy!”

311766_10151127343404879_1431177460_nThe Blessings & the Grace of Muhammad (saws). For most of us we dwell somewhere between these four polarities. But wherever we are, however high or low our state, we are, in truth, forever in His keeping, in Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful God’s good grace. And it is in this realisation that all Saliqas pray, plead, beg and cry to be guided by Allah’s own Beloved and Mercy to Creation – our Sayyidina Muhammad (saws), the Arch-intercessor & Seal of the Prophets.

For you see, the Prophet (saws), through the service of the saints and sainted ones, is the blessing that just keeps guiding and guiding, and a mercy that keeps giving and giving – the abiding assurance to the faithful, and a stern warning to all that prostrate in fearful awe of God the Most High, the Most Pure!

TO GOD ALL LIFE IS PRECIOUS …but man is often forgetful

Sheep_with_their_shepherd,_mat01285The Lord of the Creatures We Eat
Thou think My love is only for thee?
For thy kin, thy friends and thy property?
What of the sky, the river and the valleys?
What of the birds, the earth and the trees?

When thou slaughter an animal
That I have made permissible for thee
That thou might eat and live,

How does thou think I feel?
Of all sadness am I free?
………..

The Zawiya. Last week I was at a familiar old zawiya (sufi tariqa establishment) in my neighbourhood. I am blessed that way, you see. I do not have to journey far to reach a zawiya, even walking would take me a mere 10 minutes tops. But I seldom go because alas, I am also lazy that way. May Allah Almighty cure me of this slovenly attitude. Pray for me, sunshine.

IMG_20160703_060212_resized_1The Five Sheep. Anyways, after the morning prayers and assorted supererogatory devotions, the visiting shaykh (master) of the tariqa proceeded to slaughter five sheep made ready by our resident farmer and shepherd. Throughout the ceremony, the shaykh recited the dzikrullah (words of remembrance of God) and I was aware of a poignant moment – That within this next few minutes, the worldly life of a living, breathing creature would, Godwilling, be terminated. To cease to breath the air that we humans too share, to cease to look upon the world that we humans also dwell in, to end its life for the sole purpose of feeding mankind. The solemnness of this ceremony gripped me and I am afraid that I let a tear or two break free from my cold hard eyes.

Divine Mourning. For in the midst of this emotional ride, a thought crossed the wilderness of my conscience – ” O’ Taufiq. If you feel this way, how do you think God Almighty feels, loving not only humans, but all of His creation with a love you can only imagine in its shallowest human manifestation. Do you think Allah (swt) does not mourn the demise of these anonymous sheep? Surely, mankind reckons and judges things by what he knows personally, but do you think the Creator All-Knowing (al-Alim) does not know these sheep that are about to be slaughtered for your sake? “

Oak_Tree_ComboMortal Error. It is our folly we are rarely aware of the value in Allah (swt)’s gift – That He permits his most favoured creation that is Man to slaughter and consume another of His creation. This gift, like all of Allah Almighty’s blessings is not one to the taken lightly. Alas, I do not think there is much room for ceremony in the factory-like abattoir that now serves our consumption-driven society. This lack of respect for God’s creation and our fellow being is not without its karmic backlash. Ergo, the prosperous diseases that now afflict us like high cholesterol, diabetes, gout and the like.

If we learn to respect animals and the environment as Allah’s own property, will this world not be a better place, and us healthier physically and spiritually? In the name of God and by the guiding lamp that is our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saws), we can surely make good strides  by abiding to the holy Quran and the divinely inspired sunnah (traditions) of the Habibullah (Beloved of God s.a.w.s.) who wastes not and is hypersensitive to the smallest and meanest of God’s creation.

Shall we strive this way, sunshine? Is this month of Ramadan not  the best month to forge our intention?

A CUP OF BARAQA …the Creator, the Created and the Ego

IMG_20160622_181313_resizedThe Calling
I am calling them,
But few heed Me,
All they hear is
“My servant, my servant”,
And in pride,
they turn away.

Had they heeded Me,
Would have they not found in Me
Their greatest hopes?
And even more would
I have bestowed.

Would I have not
Taken them closer to Me?

In the intimacy
Of their companionship
With their children
Is an analogy
For all to wonder,
But they enquire not
And remain blind,

They say, “I am me”,
Not knowing their true nature.
Lo, that the truth would have set them free,
But they do not understand.
…………..
(Extracts from the DamSunSunAna, circa 2007.)

Divine Goodies. In this holy month of Ramadan that God Almighty has created for His servants, what wonderful openings are given to even the most miserly of sinners to seek forgiveness and blessings and often enough, simply to give thanks to Allah (swt) for all the divine goodies He has given us, the quality and quantity of which we shall never truly appreciate.

Bat-Blind. That is why the good ones always have the dzikrullah (remembrance of God) emanating from their lips and reverberating in their hearts. It is because they realise that they shall forever (and ever and ever) be indebted to their Creator, quite bat-blind to the baraqa (divine blessings) that nourishes them from pre-eternity to this very moment now. And constantly they are pleading, “O’ Lord, forgive us, for we are blind and deaf to all the blessings You have given us, save for the few miserly (that word again!) number of blessings that we are able to realise and acknowledge by Your inspiration.”

ffsfsThe Cup. So that is a good place to start, sunshine. We must ask Allah (swt) to inspire us to see the wondrous baraqa that is already overflowing out of the cup of baraqa that is our life. At the door of gratitude we approach our Lord Most Generous, following the noble steps of our betters, guided by the lantern of faith and mercy to all the worlds, Sayyidina Muhammad (saws).

The Calling & the Ego. Only once we have answered HIs call may we finally begin to learn who we truly are. Be warned though that our ego will not be happy with such humble attitude and it will react. Thus we ask Allah (swt) to give us the fortitude to reject the self-deceiving exhortations of our rampant ego claiming it knows best. Truly only Allah the Creator encompasses real awareness that is within His creation, from the brightest star in the night sky to the smallest worm burrowing in the earth. We need only accept Allah  Almighty and then ask Him – through that ever-so-nicely-and-politely-manner as is taught to us by the Prophet Muhammad (saws).
